Learn to Bury Your Guilt With Anger

“Make no mistake Mr. Wayne… I’m not on your side.”

As if I was surprised. Joker had bought me more time, that’s all I cared for. But how do I tackle Ra’s if I’m bound to an armchair?

“Now you stay here while I make arrangements for my friend… oh I know he’s going to want to come here, that little Bat of mine!” he laughed.

“Where’s Ra’s?” This was beginning to look like a game of hide and seek. Every time I land up with a bad guy, someone else goes missing.

The Joker stopped on his way out. “He’s… all in one piece, don’t worry Mr. Wayne. I don’t kill unless necessary.”

Necessary meaning until all hell breaks loose.

“Just in case though…”

It was all black after that.

About 3 hours later (at least I think so), someone splashed water on my face.

“Mr. Wayne! Mr. Wayne! Are you all right?”

“Ra’s, Gordon. Where’s Ra’s?”

“You might want to come out and see this, Mr. Wayne.”

Now what?

Finding the front door of Arkham Asylum was a task in itself. Trying to make sense of the situation on the other side of it was a different challenge altogether.

Both Ra’s and Joker, bloodied and worn out, were on the floor.

Ra’s had a lot of razor cuts all over his face, while Joker had a few front teeth missing. Being Joker, he hadn’t lost his enthusiasm though.

“I WILL KILL YOU, RA’S AL GHUL. I really will. I don’t want to know who Batman is! You’re spoiling the fun!”

By the time I got to Joker, it was too late.

A bullet was lodged neatly between Ra’s’ eyes.

Suddenly, the League of Shadows appeared out of nowhere, holding me, Gordon and Joker. And in the distance, I saw the figure of a lady running towards us. She stopped, made a gesture and turned away.

“Somehow I don’t think that’s the last I’ll be seeing of him,” said the Joker.

My thoughts were on the woman as we were dragged away…

I Want My Phone Call

When was the last time you had a normal conversation with someone?

I mean, ones where you aren’t discussing how to escape torture, and almost certain death. It’s like a rat trapped in a maze. Everything looks so easy up here, from our view, but the rat is going through hell below.

Ra’s is making me feel like that rat right now. Suddenly, I heard a feeble sound, “Mr. Wayne…”

Gordon. In the shadows. I crawled as fast as I could to him. My legs were feeling numb, somewhat.

I dragged him out into the light.

That hysterical laugh…

“Surprised to see me, Mr. Wayne?”

“Gordon? I don’t know what you’re talking about. Ra’s promised me Batman… I want Batman…”

I noticed that Joker was bleeding and his purple suit and trousers were torn in places.

“And you will have Batman, my friend… won’t he, Mr. Wayne?”

“Mr. Wayne, we have to accede to our friend’s request first… Joker has sacrificed much and has waited too long…”

That’s what I was scared of. “Joker, Mr. Wayne knows the identity of the Batman. He’s the one financing Batman. Why don’t you tell him who he is, Mr. Wayne?”

Gordon, where are you when I need you?

Suddenly, Ra’s’ guards went down. And someone was pointing a gun at Ra’s’ head.

“NOT really, Mr. Gull or Ghul or whatever your name is… why spoil all the fun? I’m officially taking over this asylum, and Mr. Wayne with me.”

Bless you, Joker.

You Become Something Else Entirely

“You see Bruce? Ra’s Al Ghul is immortal. Invincible. You are merely a mortal.”

I hated his lectures.

“You’ve become what I feared most you would – a vigilante. Gotham sees you as a nuisance, much as I do.”

Commissioner Gordon was in another corner, at gunpoint. He seemed unconscious.

“Oh I’ve just given him a mild sedative. I don’t want him listening to us.”

I got up to attack, but I heard guns clicking.

“Seriously, this is not the level of subtlety I expected from you. Or wait, maybe I should have… after all you do dress up like a BAT!”

No one could know the anger within me, “Ra’s… you really think I’m going to let you…”

“SHUT UP BRUCE! I’m not waiting for your permission! I WILL do it. The League of Shadows has to complete the noble work for which they came to this…”

He said it with a smirk, “great city.”

He went on and on, “For a long time I’ve been doing it the wrong way – I’ve been trying to destroy Batman to get Gotham.

“But Batman is a symbol of hope, an idea, something that is indestructible.”

“I realised then what a fool I had been. The only way I could get to Batman, is to get to you!”

That creepy laugh. I had one important question to ask him. “Where is the Joker?”

“Oh him… he has been treated the same way as the League treats other murdering psychopaths…”

My heart stopped for a minute…
